I recently read a compelling article in Forbes by Steve Banker. He is a leading industry analyst and an expert in supply chain management. He reminded readers that claiming ignorance about abuse or slavery in the supply chain of any product that they sell is not a defense.
That means that every single little component, every last part, of that item—an electronic component, packing tape, or a workbench grinder– must be created without slave labor, or the seller could be held responsible.
So, to my fellow entrepreneurs and business leaders… let’s all stay vigilant. More than just our companies’ good reputations are at stake. Keeping slavery out of your supply chain is actually good business sense - it leads to a sustainable supply chain and just represents good stewardship of the entire value chain. Simply put, a business is responsible for all the employees who contributed in any way to that end product. Banker gives several examples of companies that are dealing with this reality:
- ? Supreme Court Denies Nestle, Cargill, ADM Appeal in Slave Labor Case (Wall Street Journal)
- Costco Sued over Claims Shrimp Harvested with Slave Labor (Bloomberg) ?
- Brazil convicts Odebrecht Group for slavery-like practices in Angola (Reuters)
His article explains that 2015 saw an unparalleled spike in legislative and enforcement efforts. More recently, President Obama signed into law a bill closing a loophole in the 1930 Tariff Act that introduced a ban on the import of goods made by forced labor into the country. And that new law is already being enforced. Such containers of merchandise are now being stopped at the point of U.S. entry.
I know, you're thinking “Great, one more problem to handle.” And I agree, it's hard being in business today. However, then I think about the kids and families who are being abused so we can make and sell stuff, and it sure starts to feel like something worth “handling.”

9 年steve banker sounds like a little like a socialist or just nieve how in the world can some one really go back that far to see if each individual part isnt produced using slave labor besides that steve how do you know you didn't buy a product manufactured from slave labor you gonna put your self in jail no how about go after the ones who do it but wait a second now most of the slave labor places are in other countries so if you are successful what then how about the bigger picture the slave labor you so call call it was the one way those people got money for food or food how are they going to get food now

9 年i agree that slave labor is bad but this is taking things a little to far in my opinion whats next arresting citizens who purchase products from companies who down the line have slave labor, this is just another point on a ever upsetting trend of our government's idea on how to fix things. the people complain about things then instead of our government doing the right thing and introduce laws against the main culprits of the crimes they go after the people by makeing new tax's like emission testing ect. or arresting those or fining those who are at the bottom of the chain instead of going after the main culprits of the crime's like slave labor it makes me sick and its not justice in my opinion
