Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to cross paths with exceptional leaders who have not only shaped my professional journey but have also influenced my personal growth. As I reflect on the leaders who have impacted my life, I find that their influence spans various stages of my career, each leaving an indelible mark that continues to guide me today.

I was thinking over the weekend about how fortunate I have been to have some of the most amazing leadership influences in my life and I know I am not alone. I do not think we take the time to thank the leaders who have made such a difference in our lives and enable us to impact others in the same way. So, this blog is a thank you, so THANK YOU.

The Early Days: Learning the Fundamentals of Excellence

My career journey in technology began at Trilogy Software in Austin, Texas, a place where innovation was in our DNA and a meets expectations on a performance review could mean you maybe fired. It was a culture of excellence to the highest level! It was here that I was introduced to the concept of leadership in its most epic form. There are just too many people to name that had a huge influence in my life but I have to acknowledge a few incredible leaders who left a mark on me, Dennis Conley , Deborah Ingram Lazar and Heather Brunner . These people took me under their wings and taught me about real empowerment and how to rise above the fray and find superior excellence in myself. They gave me the most impossible challenges and coached me all along the way and they always had my back even when I fumbled. I remember one of my performance reviews, I was told, "Check your ego at the door, everything I will say to you will give you the tools you need to excel here. You can either use it to challenge yourself or let yourself be defeated."

There is no doubt that working in that culture with these amazing people propelled my success. What has been remarkable is how this group of remarkable intellects have stayed in touch and engaged over the years and just how many incredible humans were birthed from that amazing culture, dozens and dozens of C-Level executives and entrepreneurs. I am proud to forever call myself a Trilogian and over the years we all have helped each other frequently and have continued to be cheerleaders to our mutual successes. I actually still work with one of my favorites here at ServiceNow, Sandeep Misri !

Career Progression: Finding Your Super Power

As I transitioned into various roles in management consulting it was a journey in learning everything I could about technology, how to implement it, what resources we need, what processes we need to fix and learn to herd a hell of a lot of cats. I learned everything I could from the data center layer to the user interface. The leaders who influenced me the most along this journey were not my direct leaders, they were my customers. Sam Coursen was the first leader who taught me what it meant to really serve a customer. He always had time to share his wisdom with me. Scott Smith was another customer who completely amazed me and was such an inspiration to me over the years. As I started to engage more in the community I continued to run into other amazing leaders who emulated the kind of leader I knew I wanted to be. People like (William) Russ Finney , Diane Kenyon , Janelle Monney , Treg Russell , Twila Day , Victor Fetter , Vijay George , and Mitch McGovern (may he rest in peace).

There is no doubt in my mind that these people taught me the meaning of service. They were customers who leaned in with me to solve problems. They inspire me and the organizations they served to solve some of the toughest challenges before them and from that moment on my super power became the "problem solver". Sometimes that was something my organization I was working for could help with or sometimes it was helping people make connections. Over the course of my career, I think I have helped over hundred brilliant humans find jobs just through sharing connections. Ever single person I have helped, has helped me in return in some meaningful way over the years.

During this time, I also discovered one of the greatest tools of my career, the book called The Go-Giver by Bob Burg and John David Mann. The Go Giver is a business parable that highlights the power of giving over getting as the key to success. The key principles it teaches are:

  • Value: Provide more value than you take.
  • Compensation: Success comes from serving others.
  • Influence: Prioritize others' needs to build influence.
  • Authenticity: Be true to yourself.
  • Receptivity: Be open to receiving as well as giving.

Somehow I just connected to these principles and made them part of my DNA and it took me places I never thought possible. So, to Bob Burg , thank you!

Dreams Realized: The Path I Didn’t Anticipate

The most significant period of growth in my career came during my time at CyrusOne and later at Seton Healthcare. At CyrusOne, I had the opportunity to work with leaders who were not afraid to take bold steps. These were leaders who understood the importance of innovation and were willing to push the boundaries to achieve it. Their willingness to take calculated risks taught me the value of courage in leadership—a quality that has been essential in my subsequent roles. I followed an amazing leader to CyrusOne from EMC named Scott Hanna who was perhaps the most charismatic, kind and thoughtful leader I have ever worked for. He cares about everyone and he is a man of such grace. At CyrusOne, I met Gary Wojtaszek who was the most dynamic CEO a person could dream of working for. It with his vision along with leaders, Sylvia K. , Kevin Timmons , Dottie Spruce and Caroline Brelsford-Caldarera , just to name a few, took the company public in 2013 fulfilling a lifelong dream for us all!

In the same year CyrusOne went public, I spent a year going through Leadership Austin, Best Class Ever of 2013 led by Heather McKissick, I-CUDE where I learned what really matters in this life. Awareness of the world around me and the impact we all can make if we take the time to learn. Leadership Austin changed me forever and after CyrusOne went public I decided to take some time away, take a huge pay cut and go to work for the most prestigious non profit in Austin, Seton Healthcare.

Seton was donating over $1 billion a year to the poor and some of the most incredible human beings I have ever had the privilege of working with. Here, the focus was on service and the impact of technology on people’s lives. The leaders I worked with were deeply committed to the mission of improving healthcare through technology. They demonstrated that leadership is not just about achieving business goals but about making a positive impact on society. This experience profoundly influenced my approach to leadership, reminding me that the ultimate goal of any leader should be to leave the world a better place than they found it. I would be remiss if I did not call out a couple of folks from my time at Seton. First, is my friend for life, Michael Minks, MBA , whose witty since of humor and laser focused vision to our mission made every single day pure joy. I woke up every day, knowing I was making a difference and he validated that with every single person that worked for him. I also learned a great deal from Kate Henderson, MHA, FACHE and Herb Dyer , who were leaders of our largest hospitals. They both always took the time to lean in and pour their wisdom into everyone around them and to this day I still hold the greatest admiration for what they taught me and they probably have no idea what kind of influence they had in my life.

Strengthening My Skills: Blazing My Own Trail

After my time at Seton, I decided to go into an entirely different industry, Energy and Utilities. By far the best decision of my career. I love this industry sector, I mean love it!

My time at ERCOT is by far the most unique experience of my life and was a collective of some of the brightest minds I have ever worked with in my career. I followed a long time friend over to ERCOT, David Forfia , who in a short time, taught me the world of utilities and was the most diverse technical leader I had ever worked with. From there, I worked with perhaps the most inspirational leader of my career Adam D. Martinez and brought a sense of style to leadership. With Adam, there were zero limitations to what you could do. If you can dream it, then go build it and I have your back the entire way.

Some of you probably know that Winter Storm in 2021 hit the state very hard and ERCOT was right in the middle of all of it. I had the privilege of watching Bill Magness , Jeyant Tamby and Woody Rickerson just to name a choice few, that exhibit unbelievable leadership in a time of great tragedy for every citizen of our state. For the rest of my life, I will never be more in awe of these leaders and should I ever find myself as a leader in this kind of situation, I can only hope that I will act with the kind of grace and respect they showed everyone single employee, every single citizen and some very challenging politicians. There are just too many folks to acknowledge but I do want call out, Stephen Daniels (may he rest in peace) who died way too soon and I believe helped the entire ERCOT family realize that life is way too damn short so cherish the time you have with the people that matter most.

In the Now: Leading with Purpose and Passion

Right now, I am at ServiceNow, finding my lane in this gigantic world of software on the bleeding edge of game changing innovation. I find myself yet again with customers as my guide. Our customers and our partners have really leaned in with me sharing great ideas on how we can make the world of energy work better for everyone. I am so incredibly blessed to work with them every single day. There have been some wonderful leaders inside ServiceNow who share a common vision to make the world work better and have gone out of their way to invest in this vision together. I feel like we are just getting started and I have no doubt we can make a meaningful difference.

What I can say at this point in my journey is that working under Bill McDermott our CEO is nothing less but inspiring. This is a man who exudes excitement, perseverance and intelligence. He loves our customers, he invests in them and we are leap frogging the competition. Excited to see where we will go and where I will go here in this next chapter.

I know that I have not done enough to show the people in my life who have had an impact on me. I know I have missed a ton of people here but I hope I have shared it to some of you along the way. I hope you know how grateful I am to those of you who have made a difference in my life. I am still on my journey as a leader, but I want you to know I keep your gifts with me every single day. I hope I will do you proud and I am always here if you need me.
